Hyderabad: When it comes to the number of people living with the HIV virus, Andhra Pradesh tops the list.
However, various steps are being taken to create awareness. Legislators in Andhra Pradesh have taken a positive step to combat the HIV threat by participating in a three-day awareness camp.
As part of the Andhra Pradesh Aids Control Society's effort to combat the growing threat, legislators in Andhra Pradesh queued up to get tested for HIV AIDS.
And the first in the line was none other than Chief Minister Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy. "All MLAs should get tested and become inspiration to other people in the state," Reddy said.
Not just MLAs, their staff and security personnel at the Assembly will also undergo tests. However, the results of the tests though will not be publicised.
The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to pass a legislation making it compulsory for couples to get tested for AIDS before tying the knot.
"We are in the process of passing a legislation which makes it compulsory for boys and girls to get a HIV test done before marriage. And also those who want their marriage to be registered should get the HIV/AIDS test done," health minister of Andhra Pradesh, K Rosaiah, said.
