Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to compensate 21 Muslim youths who were wrongly detained and tortured during the Mecca Masjid, Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park blast probes.

A government report says the detainees were made to strip, were physically abused and given electric shocks.

In one case, a two liter water bottle was said to have been hung from the victim's genitals.

The government decided to compensate the detainees after they approached the Andhra Pradesh Minorities Commission. The compensation worth Rs 30,000 is being paid to them in the form of an auto rickshaw.

"Youth were arrested wrongly in the Gokul Chat, Lumbini Park and Mecca Masjid blasts on the basis of suspicion, but were proven innocent. Now compensation worth Rs 30,000 is being paid to them in the form of auto rickshaw," said Andhra Minorities Welfare Minister Mohammad Ali Shabbir.

However, even though the government had admitted on November 8 that some Muslim youths were wrongly detained and tortured, no official is willing to talk on the subject.

Nearly 70 Muslim men were detained by the police in the wake of the blasts that rocked Mecca Masjid, Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park in may and August 2007.
