New Delhi: The ceasefire agreement, which had given relief for Indian and Pakistani troops after years of bloody skirmishes, no longer holds good as there have been violations after violations from the Pakistani side and there's no let up in infiltration.

The latest bit of infiltration came on Monday afternoon when 12 Pakistani troops crossed into the Nowgam sector in Kupwara on the Line of Control. An altercation followed and then firing, resulting in one Indian jawan being killed and four dead on the Pakistani side.

Defence Minister A K Antony has expressed concern over the "sharp increase in ceasefire violations over past few months". The protest was conveyed by Director-General Military Operations Lt General AS Sekhon to his Pakistani counterpart on the hotline.

New Delhi has now raised an Army presence along the LoC and the border. Antony has however made it clear India will observe restraint to prevent an escalation in hostilities.

Pakistan for its part has claimed no Pakistani soldier had crossed the LoC and that the firing was provoked by India.

An official Pak Army spokesperson has said that Indian soldiers wanted to establish a forward post in the area on the Pakistani side of LoC, and that on Pakistan's' objection, Indian troops opened indiscriminate and unprovoked fire.
