New Delhi: Many private schools in Hyderabad have been encashing on the IIT dream, with foundation courses for students. But now, the state government has imposed a ban on such courses saying schools cannot go beyond what's prescribed in the SSC syllabus.
Says School Education Minister, C Damodar Rajanarasimha, "These additional titles are illegal. We're directly putting the children under mental stress and strain. It's not a healthy practice."
The government says that private schools are wrongly charging additional fees for such courses. Not only that, parents are forced to buy heaps of extra books.
They also say that the NCERT and other agencies have designed the SSC syllabus keeping in view the age, IQ level and grasping power of the students.
Though the private schools are yet to react, parents are a divided lot.
Says a concerned parent, Sheila, "What is taught in books is not sufficient for gaining knowledge. The children need to read something extra also."
Adds another parent, A M Sirish, "I think it is wrong on the part of the school management to stress the children beyond the six-hours."
The government has asked all District Educational Officers to prepare a report on additional courses being taught in private schools. A complaint cell is also being set up in all DEO offices, where parents can lodge complaints about such courses.
Starting with show-cause notices, the government also plans to impose fines and even cancel recognition, if schools continue with courses such as the IIT foundation course.
