Srinagar: Army jawan Naik Subedar Chunni Lal died fighting in Keran along the line of control, after killing five terrorists in a gun battle on Sunday.
He was shot in the lower portion of his body while firing the terrorists hiding in the undergrowth.
“He was bleeding profusely but kept on firing so that they won't escape and he made sure that all the militants who had crossed the line of Control were eliminated,'' said Colonel R P Singh Commanding Officer (CO) of 8 JAKLI.
People who knew him remember him more for his heroics in Siachen in 1987. He was among the first four Indian soldiers to recapture Qaid post at a height of 21,000 feet.
”He was among the first ones to reach Qaid post right on top and he along with three others, for which he got the Sena medal,'' said Brigadier R E Williams Lal's former CO.
Twelve years later Lal was in Kargil where Indian troops pushed back Pakistan-backed intruders.
He was also awarded the Vir Chakra for his exploits during Operation Rakshak.
Lal was truly a man of determination and true courage. He is survived by his wife and two children.
