Surat: Water level in the Tapi river has been steadily rising as the state government has been forced to release more than eight lakh cusecs of water from the Ukai dam.
A few low-lying areas have already been inundated, while more areas are likely to experience water logging.

Fifty thousand people had been evacuated from Surat district till Monday late night.
"Water is presently flowing about eight metres above the Narmada dam. We have alerted villagers living along the river, but the situation is under control," says Director, Relief of Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) D A Satya.
About 54 villages in Surat district are likely to be affected by rising water levels in Tapi, while Bharuch, Vadodara, Surat and Navsari have been placed on an alert.

Even though Surat city has been spared major flooding so far, authorities have asked the residents to move to safer grounds as a precautionary measure.
"Water is bound to flow. That cannot be stopped. People must move to safer areas. And then the five or six hours when there is a high tide, are also very important and crucial," said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Four helicopters of the Indian Air Force, 70 boats, five columns of army and two columns of the CRPF have been mobilised for rescue work.
