New Delhi: For the second time in less than a week, the Indian military top-brass has pressed the political leadership for higher pay.

The service chiefs met Defence Minister AK Antony yet again on Tuesday, seeking 50 per cent more than what the Pay Commission has recommended for the military.

Trashing the Pay Commission proposals, the Chiefs of Staff committee has sought a higher increase for the jawans and the middle-ranking officers.

These categories seemed to have got the worst deal from the Commission.

The military is first seeking parity in basic pay with civilian counterparts. The newly-suggested Military Service Pay has been used by the Pay Commission to give the forces a slight edge in aggregate salary.

But the basic salary seems to be lower than the civilian counterparts. The forces argue that this takes away the real advantage that the Military Service Pay is intended to give. The military is also seeking the same pension as their civilian counterparts.

The services chiefs had met Antony last week as well, protesting the “raw deal” given to them.
