Dhaka: In her first interview after her return from London, former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina has hit out at the army controlled interim administration.
Hasina accused the government of deliberately delaying the elections in Bangladesh.
“In the past, after 1975, we had military rule and they destroyed each and every institution… This caretaker government, in the name of reforms, should not kill time. They should allow people to chose their own government,” said Hasina.
She was speaking exclusively to Sumon Chakrabarti of CNN-IBN.
Sumon Chakrabarti: When do you exactly feel that elections should be held?
Sheikh Hasina: If you ask me when, I will say as soon as possible – at this moment. They should not delay; they should not spoil people’s time.
Sumon Chakrabarti: When do you think the democracy will come back to Bangladesh?
Sheikh Hasina: In the past, after 1975, we had military rule and they destroyed each and every institution. Election Commission, judiciary – every institution they have destroyed. This caretaker government, in the name of reforms, should not kill time. They should allow people to chose their own government.
Sumon Chakrabarti: Right now?
Sheikh Hasina: Right now.
Sumon Chakrabarti: They are saying the electoral roles are not made as yet.
Sheikh Hasina: Well, last four months, they are saying same thing but not taking any action. Now, in the name of electoral role, if you just delay and delay – it’s a delaying tactics. But they should not play this delaying tactics anymore – people are not fool.
Sumon Chakrabarti: There were lots of talks by this interim government that they are cracking down on corruption. They have arrested people from the BNP; they have arrested people from your party, the Awami League. Will you, if proved correct in the court of law, throw out those leaders who are proved to be corrupt from your party?
Sheikh Hasina: Their stand against the corruption – at first they started, okay fine, we supported it – but where is that stand now? There are so many corrupt people moving around. When I was abroad, I heard about my bank account… Then each and every account, how much money I have or the BNP leader have, first give that list.
Sumon Chakrabarti: That should be made public.
Sheikh Hasina: Yes, you make it public.
Sumon Chakrabarti: Do you think there is any possibility of the Awami League getting together with the BNP in a political movement?
Sheikh Hasina: No, with BNP never.
