LoC, Uri: The Army in Jammu and Kashmir has a new mantra to deal with terrorism in the state – do away with the iron fist and wear the velvet glove. And it’s already proving effective.
Abdul Hamid reunited with his family in emotional way as he comes back from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after seven years.
He had gone there for weapons training as a terrorist. But later he was dejected and decided to give up the gun.
''There are many people. 900 militants who are there want to come. If Government of India forgives us, many would comeback,'' said Hamid.
''I never thought he will come back alive,'' said Hamid’s mother
Twenty four surrendered terrorists, who returned from PoK, are now with their families. Another 26 will join their families soon.
The Army has promised amnesty to all those who want to return to the Valley.
''Any militant who wants to come back to India and surrender – in case he does not fire at us and says he wants to surrender – he will not be dealt sternly,'' said Lt Col A K Mathur.
The state government and the Army are considering giving safe passage to terrorists willing to give up.
The army feels such a move would lure more militants to return to their families.
Precisely that is why they don't call it a surrender ceremony, they call it homecoming or reunion with the family.
