California: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s record on the environment, including his signature two years ago on landmark legislation to combat global warming has fueled speculation that he's being considered by Barack Obama for a top appointment perhaps energy secretary.

“The environment's been a big issue for the governor over the last couple of years. So it would seem like a potential natural step for him but there's also plenty of skepticism,” says

“I don't think it's the right job for him. I would rather see him in the role as roving ambassador after his term is done. I'm not aware of any occasions where a president appoints someone to the Cabinet, and that individual has called him "scrawny",” says Sacramento Assembly Member, Dave Jones.

Jones is referring to last month's McCain rally in Ohio, when the governor made fun of Obama's physique. However, the president-elect spoke to Schwarzenegger’s climate summit in Los Angeles via videotape.

Obama's support for a market-based program to scale back emissions and development of clean energy is a welcome change for the governor and California activists used to doing battle with the bush white house.

“I think now we have a real opportunity for California to have a willing partner in the federal government in Washington DC,” says Bill Magavern.

But does that warmer relationship extend to a job offer.

“He's not been approached about that. He's said that he has over two years left in his term, there's a lot he wants to do over the next two years, so he's not going anywhere,” Schearzenegger Spokesman, Aaron McLear.

There's also been talk about Schwarzenegger going to Washington a different way. By running for the U.S. Senate. But that opening doesn't take place until 2010, when he's termed out of the governorship.
