Chennai: Even as the number crunching continues, the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) is trying to ensure that the Maran-Karunanidhi rift will not affect the United Progressive Alliance Government's crucial Vote of Confidence on July 22.

On May 14, 2007, just a day after he was removed from the Union Cabinet an emotional Dayanidhi Maran desperately tried to reach out to his party high command declaring, "I was born as a DMK man and I will die as a DMK man."

Since then the Maran brothers have often tried to make up. Kalanidhi Maran even met DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's son MK Stalin on his birthday in February 2008.

But weeks later when the Maran brothers tried to meet Karunanidhi on his birthday, they were refused a meeting and Karunanidhi's elder son MK Azhagiri hit out saying no one in the party should entertain the Marans.

Sources close to Dayanidhi Maran say he's angry with the party and may defy the party's whip and abstain during the Vote of Confidence and that has made the DMK nervous, as even a single vote could be crucial for the UPA's survival.

The DMK is keen to avoid a confrontation at this stage and so after a bitter family feud that's lasted more than a year, it's time for the party to reach out to Dayanidhi Maran.

DMK Parliamentary Party Leader and Union Minister for Road and Highways TR Baalu said, "Dayanidhi Maran is not a child. He is experienced and the son of our great leader Murasoli Maran. He knows how to respond to a crisis."

While Baalu's statement reaching out to Dayanidhi Maran is an effort to avert an open confrontation during the trust vote, party sources say that there's virtually no scope for reconciliation in the family.

They also say that if an MP defies the party whip then he or she would have to face very severe disciplinary action.
