Varanasi: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan, son Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai are scheduled to perform a puja at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi in the early hours of Monday, sparking off rumours that the younger Bachchan and Aishwarya may tie the knot.

District administration sources report that Amitabh will also be accompanied by wife Jaya, daughter Shweta Nanda, brother Ajitabh and Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh.

The entourage is expected to fly into the city by a chartered flight on Sunday night and drive down straight to the Taj Ganges hotel where 22 rooms are booked for them.

The puja is to be performed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Amitabh's father, late Harivanshrai Bachchan.

A high-security ring is being put into place around the temple, which will be closed to devotees while the one-hour puja is on. The mangala aarti (prosperity invocation) is scheduled for 0330 hrs IST on Monday.

The Varanasi administration was tight-lipped about the visit until the news leaked out Sunday morning.

But strains of wedding bells never seem to be far from Aishwarya and Abhishek.

If the buzz in the media is to be believed, the two families have reportedly agreed to the wedding and the couple has decided to walk down the aisle.

A few months ago similar rumours had gathered momentum after it was revealed that the actor's uncle, Ajitabh Bachchan, had visited well-known astrologer Chandrashekhar Swami in Bangalore with the horoscopes of the two.

But the rumours died down soon after. On their part, Aishwarya and Abhishek have kept their fans guessing on whether the relationship is a platonic one or there is indeed some substance to the speculation.

Aishwarya has always been tight lipped about the relationship while Abhishek has managed to evade the topic whenever he has confronted the issue.

Abhishek and Aishwarya have starred in four films together so far - Rohan Sippy's Kuch Na Kaho, Raj Kanwar's Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, J P Dutta’s Umrao Jaan and most recently, Sanjay Gadhvi`s Dhoom 2.

They also teamed up along with Amitabh Bachchan for an item song in last year's hit flick Bunty Aur Babli, and the song Kajra Re went on to win a cult following in the country.

The couple will soon be seen in another new movie, Mani Ratnam’s Guru. They are also likely to work together in Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar 2.
