The violence in Kandhamal may have scaled down but what has not receded is the mindset of fear amongst the victims. Those living at the mercy of the state in refugee camps are too scared to venture to what were once their homes.

Orissa: Maoists arrested, Christians hopeful

Three Maoists were arrested in connection with the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Lakshmananda in Kandhamal district of Orissa. Sister Nirmala also says that the Orissa government is finally acting in Kandhamal but her views are not shared by the National Minorities Commission.

VHP rejects Maoists' Swami murder claim

A prominent Maoist leader, Sabyasachi Panda, has claimed responsibility for the murder of VHP swami Laxmanand Saraswati, which triggered large-scale flare-ups against Christians in Orissa's Kandhamal district. Speaking from an undisclosed location, Panda told local TV channels, his outfit killed Saraswati because he was spreading "social unrest". VHP, however, has rejected the claim saying Naxals don't have a religious agenda.

Criminals get free run in riot-hit Orissa district

Orissa has been witnessing anti-Christian violence for the past two months but now for the first time violence against non-Christians has been reported. A 20-year-old girl was raped by four men on September 21 in Bopanmendi village. But later was it found that she is a Hindu and that only her grandparents had converted to Christianity.

Heavy paramilitary presence, yet Kandhamal burns

At least one person has been killed and four injured as a mob attacked and burned down Christian village. Even though there are 4,000 paramilitary personnel deployed in the district, normalcy has not returned completely.

Kandhamal uproar intensifies, CM calls Centre for help

More than a hundred houses have been burnt and at least one church attacked in fresh violence at Kandhamal in Orissa. One person is reported dead and curfew is still on at most areas. Orissa Chief Minister (CM) Navin Patnaik has demanded the Centre to send in 10 more companies of paramilitary forces. The miscreants have fell trees across the roads to delay the security forces from reaching the spots of violence, a reason why even 20 companies of paramilitary forces have not been able to stop violence in Kandhamal.

Man saves hospital patients amidst flood

The flood in Orissa has caused 35 deaths and has affected 38 lakh people of 18 districts. Though it's a disastrous situation, it gave rise to exceptional courage of a schoolteacher in Puri who risked the lives of his two children to save patients in a flooded hospital.

The flood situation in coastal Orissa remains grim in spite of flood water gradually receding. The state government is now turning the heat on the Centre for not making enough efforts and wants the navy to help them out.

Orissa floods 'worse' than Bihar, lakhs stranded

Floods in Orissa now have affected 24 lakh people and the Chief Minister has requested the Centre to give him more aid and declare a national calamity in the state. The road between Bhubaneswar and Puri was flooded after a breach in an embankment. It is just one the 61 major breaches on several embankments of the Mahanadi river. Several flood victims have taken refuge along roads and highways. "My house is washed away, all my belongings are gone. Now I am struggling to feed my children. Please help us," said flood victim Sulachana Sahoo.
