Bangalore: No jeans, T-shirts or salwar kameez. It's saris for women and formals for men and no fancy hairstyles please and strangely, these regulations aren't for students.

It is the prescribed dress code for teachers at Bhagwan Mahavir Jain College in Bangalore to make them look distinguished.

Says Principal, Bhagwan Mahavir jain College, N Sunderraj, "All our teachers are in the age group of 25 and above so this dress code makes it easy for us to distinguish between teacher and students.

But a dress code for teachers is not quite new. While Sesadripuram College has just introduced it, institutes like Women's Christian College have been following it for years.

A teacher at the Bishop Cotton Women's Christian College, Sumita Kumar, says, "It is essential for us to distinguish between the girls and the faculty, so this is one of the reasons we opted for a dress code."

There are others who feel a dress code is important for teachers as they are often looked up to as role models.

Principal, Bishop Cotton Women's Christian College, Professor Hephzibah S Doss, says, "Girl students certainly imitate teachers and they are influenced by them. That maybe another reason why we want the teachers to be in a sari."

And students agree, saying that they always judge their teachers by what they wear.

"If my teacher comes into class wearing a low-rise jeans or a skimpy skirt, I'll be taken aback. It's more than what you wear, it's how you wear it. A sari can be worn neatly or thrown on carelessly," say students.

It's a time where 'my style' and 'my individuality' are the most used buzzwords on college campuses, a place where most see uniforms as relics of the past. Students hope that teachers donning dress codes can change that.
