Bangalore: It has been raining non-stop in Bangalore for the past one week, creating a ten-year record. Newly developed areas on the outskirts have been the worst hit.
That is because of potholes, it has been a month of continuous rain and the city's roads have started resembling the craters on the moon. The met department says the rains in August have been the highest over the last ten years. And this has worsened the chronic traffic jams which Bangaloreans face everyday
“Its very inconvenient for people like us to drive on these roads, its very bad, its horrendous. The government needs to take action this,” says a commuter.
Officials of the city corporation BBMP say they want to get the potholed roads repaired. Problem is they don’t have funds
“We are gathering several taxes but most of the money is not given to development of roads, 1000-1500 crores are collected from fuel cess another 1500 crores from infrastructure cess but unfortunately only a pittance comes for road construction,” says traffic and infrastructure advisor to Karnataka Govt, MN Srihari.
Experts say the only way to solve the current pothole mess is to lay a two-layer betamine concrete road with a seal coat but with authorities are busy playing blame games.
