New Delhi: India's One-Day and Twenty20 skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni seems to have become a pawn in an age-old battle between cricket and other sports.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a clarification to media reports suggesting that there was a delay in submitting Dhoni's application to the Sports Ministry for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna this year.

In a press release issued by its Secretary Niranjan Shah, the BCCI said it had dispatched a letter through the postal department by Speed Post on May 27 recommending Dhoni for the country’s top sports award while also forwarding the names of Chandu Borde (Dhyanchand award) and VS Patil (Dronacharya award).

The last date for submission of forms was May 31.

The controversy has prompted BCCI's Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty to allege that cricketers are being discriminated against when it comes to these awards.

"I only hope that cricketers are not treated in a different way when it comes to selecting nominations for various awards. The committee should consider the fact that these players are also doing their bit and that it is not an Olympic game should not go against them, Shetty said.
