New Delhi: How many of you have resolved to lose weight this year? From aspiring fitness freaks to couch potatoes dreaming to get into that perfect figure or to be more unrealistic—flaunting a washboard tummy with those wonder abs. No matter how we define fitness, losing weight has been on most our minds.
“My new year resolution is to loose weight,” says software executive Nishant Mehra. “I want to cut on colas and be more fit. I want to take up jogging and exercises to get fit and have the right weight,” investment analyst, Shubhangi Malik says.
We have tried treadmills, crash diets, jogging, but a bigger problem is how to stay motivated while carrying on a fitness routine. Well, we suggest—be realistic in your fitness plan. If you are craving for that extra piece of chocolate, go ahead and eat it. But the key is, make space for it by eating less of something else. Remember portion control is key to fitness.
“Portion control leads to moderation which means that nothing really needs to be eliminated from your diet. You just have to adjust yourself to eating small portions,” suggests nutritionist Ishi Khosla.
Remember the simple equation—eating ‘more calories than you burn’ is equal to weight gain. So, track your food intake and physical activity.
If pumping weights at the local gym isn't your scene, or you just don't have the time for it, take small breaks like taking your dog out for a walk, climbing the stairs (instead of the lift) and making fitness a priority.
Keep track of your progress by weighing yourself regularly, don't overdo it, but when you see that needle is pointing in the wrong direction, you know you need to cut on that everyday junk food.
Hit the treadmill with renewed vigour. And don't be too hard on yourself. Celebrate fitness, because you know, half the battle is won in the mind.
