H.W.Ghayal Implement a low-cost durable rainwater collection and storage schemes next rainy season on the following lines.

- Dig a large pit to about 10 feet depth.
- The bottom of the pit could be levelled and filled with with a layer of concrete of 3-4 inches
- Place stacks of 4' 6" feet dia cement rings to fill the entire depth of the pit, and about one foot above the ground level. There could be more than one stack existing side-by-side, depending on the available base area of the pit.
- Fill the pit back with matti outside the rings.
- Now we have a number of "wells" in the pit.
-Place thick sheets of polythene one each inside a well so as to cover bottom and side walls of the well right upto the top. We have a polythene container supported by the walls and bottom of the "wells".
- The capacity of a 10 foot deep well will be about 3000 litres.
- Run hard PVC pipes connecting one well to other in "siphon" fashion.
-- Once it rains fill each well with some water (say 1ft height) and make the siphen operational, thereby interconnecting all the wells.
-- Now the rainwater could be directed to only one well, which will get transferred to other wells through the interconnecting siphens.
-- A suitable cover to be made which could be locked to ensure safety and direct contact with sunlight. The cover could be common to all wells are to a group of them. It could be grouted in the ground securely.
--Water need to be drawn by a pump from only one well. Siphon action will ensure that all wells transfer water to this well.

The one time cost of such arrangment I think will be about Rs. 1.5 - 1.75 per litre compared to say Rs. 5-6 for a constructed tank. The life will be almost unlimited. At the most the polythene sheets may have to be changed after a few years if they get damaged.

The advantage of using rings is that we can build this storage incrementally instead of . One could even use larger (5' 6") dia rings and larger depth.
