Samastipur: Marriage proposals have been hard to come by at a village in Bihar.

It is after a gap of five years that wedding songs are being sung in Dhanua village of Samastipur in Bihar. For a long time this village had no road access and residents say it was the inaccessibility that was discouraging young men from seeking brides here.

“The weddings did not happen here for a long time. Ten girls could not get married. The roads gave a lot of problem,” says a troubled villager, Ram Pyari Devi.

However, Suman's marriage was fixed recently. But the groom's family later threatened to call off the wedding as there was no road for the marriage procession to travel on.

“The boys side said that only if their vehicle will be able to come to the village, the relations will be made,” says girls father, Bhola Yadav.

That was when the entire village decided to take the matter into their own hands. Men, women and kids have been working tirelessly to build a road for the boys side.

Having waited for five-years to get a road built, the villagers have now run out of patience. They are leaving nothing to fate now.

For long the only way to get to Dhanua was by walking seven kilometers. Despite repeated pleas, villagers say the authorities turned a blind eye. However, Suman's marriage has proven to them that self-help is the best way to succeed.
