New Delhi: The Central Zoo authority has alerted zoos across the country to take precautionary measures against the bird flu virus.
Bird flu has hit 13 districts in West Bengal. The menace has spread its wings beyond the domain of Bengal's poultry to the accompanying financial losses for farmers.
The Left Front government is also worried about the political fall-out and its impact on the vote-bank.
Orissa has sealed its borders with West Bengal and banned the import of poultry from the neighbouring state hit by bird flu to prevent the spread of the deadly virus
However, the scare has also spread to neighbouring Bihar where culling operations are on in two districts.
The Uttar Pradesh government has already sealed borders with Bihar to check the spread of the flu after reports of birds being smuggled from these states.
The bird flu panic also spread to Haryana where poultry deaths were reported, but the state government has dismissed the fears.
District authorities however say that the birds did not die due to bird flu but septicemia.
Authorities said they have already collected bird samples to check for bird flu. However, there have been no symptoms of the disease in the Bhiwani district so far.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the infections were respiratory in nature and caused due to the drastic fall in temperature in the state.
Meanwhile, over 3,000 chickens were found dead in a ditch in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday though authorities ruled out bird flu as the cause of death.
The dead chickens were found in Theni district, 30 km west of here. Fearing an epidemic, the district administration burnt the carcasses.
