Bangalore: Karnataka politics has dipped to a new low with the BJP and the Congress sparring over celebrations at the Baba Budangiri Shrine — a place that is also known the Ayodhya of the South.
BJP MLA, Chikamagalur, C T Ravi led a BJP-VHP delegation to the Raj Bhavan seeking to carry on with Datta Jayanti celebrations on December 22.
“I requested governor to perform Hindu pujas in Datta Peeta. We invited honourable governor to visit and solve this long-pending issue,” he says.
Datta Jayanti is celebrated at Datta Peeta, a cave temple, in the Baba Budangiri Hills in the Chikmagalur district. Incidentally, that’s also home to the Dargah of Sufi saint Baba Budan Saheb.
Since 1975, the Jan Sangh and BJP's attempts to assert its Hindutva agenda in the area have been severely curbed by both courts and the district administration.
Every year, the Datta Peeta is home to another round of controversies, communalism and saffron agendas.
“Power or no power, Hindus are there, the shrine is there, and the intentions are there. That'll continue,” asserts VHP Secretary B N Murthy.
The congress clearly feels there is a clear electoral agenda in the Hindutva war-cry.
“They're doing it just because the elections are round the corner. They know they're fighting a losing battle, and they don't have a chance,” says Congress General Secretary Prakash Rathod.
