Pune: As Sanjay Dutt’s lawyers prepare to approach the Supreme Court for his bail plea, Munnabhai's supporters have found a tech-savvy way of supporting him. A website called www.boletoh.com is running an online petition to campaign against Dutt's sentence.

“I support Dutt not because I'm a fan but because he has been jailed for 16 months and then given bail. He has behaved well for the past 10 years, then why this whole thing again? It doesn't make sense,” a supporter who has signed in on boletoh.com, Mridula Sarachandra said.

It’s not just the online petition, fans are also using SMSes to spread their support for Dutt, however, this move has angered those who believe the sentence was well deserved.

Members of Shiv Sena's Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Sena (BVS) have written to the Pune Police Commissioner seeking action against a particular message centre number of cellular network Idea that has forwarded SMSes asking its subscribers to share their views on Dutt's conviction.

“Everyone is entitled to one’s opinions but not in this manner. This is against the judiciary,” Pune city president of BVS, Ajay Shinde said.

Meanwhile, public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam has reacted sharply to reports that Bollywood stars were thinking of a signature campaign to free Dutt.

“If someone starts such a campaign criticising the order of the court (before the prisoner seeks relief), it certainly amounts to contempt of court. I am watching the events carefully and if this continues, I will be forced to take legal action,” Nikam said.

Dutt's conviction has given birth to yet another public trial of a judicial case. Even though the actor’s supporters feel they have the right to voice their concern, for government advocates this is a clear case of subversion of judiciary.
