Summer is here and I am too hot to get outdoors. If you are too, I'd recommend, putting on the AC, making yourself a jug of nimboo pani and settling down to a great book. Here are the books I have been reading...
1. The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson: Quite simply the most addictive book I've read this year. It's a Swedish thriller with a remarkable heroine at the centre of it who is a tattoo covered, social delinquent and a genius hacker. This is the first book of a trilogy. The second is out too, and the third comes next year. They are a sensation internationally. I've bored everyone recommending it but can't seem to stop myself.
2. James Bond: Would you believe me if I said the books are so much better than the films? Ian Fleming's slick, stylish, tight little thrillers have been a recent discovery for me and I occasionally spend my Sundays reading them in bed. I recommend you do the same.
3. Empires of the Indus by Alice Albinia: I'd been meaning to read this acclaimed travel book of a young woman's journey along the River Indus and finally got around to it. It's remarkable. She's funny and erudite, and draws a riveting portrait of the region from the Indus Valley Civilization, through to Alexander the Great (I loved this bit) and the Mughals and then down to the present day. The history, told in a light, anecdotal style, is interspersed with the travelogue, some of which is pretty thrilling stuff. Alice travelled up to some of Pakistan's most remote and dangerous regions.
And here's a Random House India title to watch out for: the memoirs of Slumdog Millionaire's Rubina, Slumgirl Dreaming. It's out in July and is told in the little girl's voice, about her leap into stardom and her stories of the shooting of Slumdog Millionaire. Wanted to know how the famous poo scene really got made? Find out here!
