Chennai: Eight-year-old Ambika dropped out of third standard a year ago, after a fall-out between her parents. But now she is back in class thanks to the efforts of her teachers. It took them four visits to her home to persuade her feuding parents to let Ambika study.

"I stopped coming to school one year ago because my parents kept fighting. Then my teacher came home and brought me back to school," says Ambika.

Ambika is just one of many students, whose education has been saved by the efforts of teachers at Chennai's corporation run schools. These teachers keep a track of the drop-outs and visit their houses personally to convince their parents to send the children back to school.

A teacher at a Tharamani Corporation School, G Tamilselvi says, "Due to various reasons children suddenly stop coming to school. We make a note of these students and go to their houses and explain the importance of education to these parents and bring the children back to school."

G Tamilselvi's school has succeeded in bringing back at least 30 drop-outs in the last five years.

With the high level of competition in today's modern world, this initiative by the Chennai Corporation teachers is a positive step ahead. The efforts of these teachers will ensure a secure future for the children who will grow up to be the future of our country.
