'Let's work together': Fierce rivals Shashi Tharoor and Narendra Modi show grace and maturity on Twitter after polls

Thank goodness for common decency. The bitterly fought General Elections of 2014 had generally brought out the worst in our politicians. Popular leaders and their galaxy of supporters threw muck at each other at every chance they got - during rallies, in the print, during television interviews and online - on social forums.
The brutal namecalling and biting sarcasm the netas would bandy about would often spill over on Twitter, where most leaders had active and vibrant accounts and a huge follower base.Things had got to a point where no political opinion would pass unchallenged, uncontested and without a threat, at least once a day, of grim retribution or worse - of mass unfollowing. In such a situation, it was with a pleasant jolt of surprise many noticed the quiet exchange between some of our leaders from both the winning and losing sides.Congress leader Shashi Tharoor openly acknowledged that he was impressed with BJP's PM-designate Narendra Modi's "conciliatory and inclusive statements". "We must ensure he lives up to them and works for the benefit of ALL Indians," Tharoor tweeted. Retweeted over 600 times, the responses to the tweet predictably polarised his supporters, although the majority lauded him for showing maturity in appreciating the work of a rival.Tharoor, who contested and won from the Thiruvananthapuram Parliamentary seat, earlier said he called my BJP rival O Rajagopal "to compliment him on a tough race". Modi on his part responded rather graciously and said "Congratulations for your victory as well. Let's work together to create a better India". BJP leader Arun Jaitley who lost his debut Lok Sabha election from Amritsar, was one of the firsts to congratulate his political rival Captain Amarinder Singh. At a time when vicious Twitter attacks on dissenters have become a norm, such graceful and charming reactions from our politicians can only pave the way for better, informed and mature debate on social media on policies - the only way forward.####Congratulations to the BJP & Mr Modi.
