The fact that people continue to take to Twitter to discuss RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, even almost a week after everybody spoke at length about his jawline, tailored suits and his classy looks, speaks volumes about the indelible impact he has left on the minds of his supporters.
For those who came in late, last week the media went crazy chatting about how 50 (the age number) never looked great as it did on Raghuram Rajan, courtesy Shobhaa De. It was the top-selling novellist's write-up that drew everyone's attention to Raghuram as a sex symbol. While many continue to think that with his flawless features and flattering looks has helped him earn more fame, we tell you why only the new RBI governor deserves to be compared with Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor. Even though his term was to officially end in September 2011, the Prime Minister’s Office extended it by two years until 4 September 2013. Earlier, he worked as the Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (2005-2007). Besides being the lead economist in the World Bank (1999-2004) and Finance Secretary to the Government of Andhra Pradesh (1993-98), he was also given the post of Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India (1988-1993). But let us face it, he doesnt have the repute for being the most stunning of folks. An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1964 batch, Dr YV Reddy served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) (India’s central bank) from September 6, 2003 to September 5, 2008. Agreed, we are happy with the way he shouldered his responsibilities as the RBI governor, but is he attractive enough to be pitted against Raghuram Rajan? Dr Bimal Jalan served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from November 22, 1997 to Septemeber 6, 2003. Bimal, who was primarily appointed as Governor, for a term that lasted for three years, he was re-appointed as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, first for two years (November 22, 2000 to November 21, 2002) and again for the next two years (November 22, 2002 to November 21, 2004). On August 27, 2003, he was nominated as Rajya Sabha member. He relinquished office as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on September 6, 2003. Bimal may have been an embodiment of power and control, but theres nothing incredibly charming about him, right?C Rangarajan served as a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1991, post which he served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (December 22, 1992 to December 21, 1997). From November 24, 1997 to January 3, 2003, he served After demitting that office, he took charge as the Chairman of the Twelfth Finance Commission. He may have not have serious fashion credentials, but he is neither one of those governors who hogged the limelight for his looks? It was his work that helped him make headlines. If we were to rate Montek Singh Ahluwalia for his competence, intelligence and role as Indian economist and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of the Republic of India, he would get much higher rating than he ever would for his attractiveness.
