New Delhi: Three policemen and a freelance photographer were seriously injured when a speeding blue Maruti Esteem car hit them while running through a series of barricades opposite Lodhi Colony in Delhi early Sunday morning.

Sukhmani Raut’s 21-year-old son Harish, one of the injured policemen, has been in the New Delhi Trauma Centre for over 36 hours. His condition is reported to be critical.

“The doctors had earlier said that they might have to keep Harish in the ICU for five days. But now they’re saying that it can take up to one month. They say that his brain has been severely hurt,” says Sukhmani.

The Rauts are not alone in their hour of grief. Family members of Head Constable Ramesh Chander, who is also battling for his life, are also waiting to hear for any piece of good news from the doctor.

“He was doing his duty. People curse police all the time but they never think about what they do,” says Ramesh’s son, Amit Bhardwaj.

While the police are yet to make any major breakthrough in the case, they have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for anyone who provides the details of the car owner. A case has also been registered against unknown persons.

“We already on our job to locate the vehicle and specific teams have been formed with specific areas given to them. They are going and searching for these vehicles according to the area, registration address and other things,” says DCP south Delhi Anil Shukla.

With the men in uniform battling for survival, it just drives home the fact that the streets of Delhi continue to remain unsafe.
