Caste cauldron: Anti-Maya camp grows in UP

Muzaffarnagar: A defiant Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Mahender Singh Tikait's no-holds-barred verbal assault on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati resulted in a pitched battles between hundreds of armed policemen and over 25,000 BKU activists at his native village Sisoli in Uttar Pradesh.

The police tried to arrest the BKU leader after his casteist slur on the CM at Sunday's Swabhimaan Rally in Bijnore, UP. But Tikait's supporters turned violent and the police had to lob teargas shells to suppress the mob.

Meanwhile, Tikait remains defiant. “Here we say jaat, chamaar, himmar, nai, dhobi and this is acceptable amongst us,” he said.

All anti-Mayawati political forces in the state are now coming together including, Ajit Singh of the RLD.

“Mayawati may be going around with prime ministerial ambitions around the country, but she will not be spared in UP,” Ajit Singh said.

Both Ajit Singh as well as Tikait are expected to hold more such anti-Mayawati panchayats in the coming days. So, as parties stir the caste cauldron, the political temperature is also expected to go up in western UP.

Mayawati knows that these mass panchayats can spell disaster for her. After all, Tikait enjoys support in the entire sugarcane belt and to make matters worse, he has got the support of both the Congress and the RLD.
