New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has finally started identifying the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) cadres responsible for the firing on unarmed villagers in Nandigram last year.

When unarmed villagers protested against land acquisition in Nandigram on March 14, 2007, police personnel allegedly opened fire killing 14 people.

The CBI, which was handed over the investigation, has now decided to put four CPI-M party members, including two zonal committee members, through the lie detector.

They include Badal Guru Das, Himanshu Das, Bijon Roy and Naba Samanta.

After months of contradictory statements from both the ruling CPI-M and the Opposition, the CBI has now identified 11 CPI-M party members who dressed up in khaki as policemen and opened fire on the protestors.

During the March 14, 2007, firing, it was also alleged that some people in police uniform raped women.

The CBI says that the CPI-M cadre they arrested a few days back, Badal Garudas, had raped a woman and her two daughters on that fateful day.

The investigating agency is also awaiting the final forensic report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on the number of bullets that were fired on that day because the agency had found discrepancy in the police inquest, the magistrate's inquest and the postmortem report of those who died in the police firing.

Sources have told CNN-IBN that the number of bullet injuries counted is far higher than the state's CPI-M-led government figures.

And the final CBI report can inflict more damage on the CPI-M's image.
