Hyderabad: Hyderabad gangster Aziz Reddy alias Baba Reddy was gunned down in a shootout with police on Wednesday night.

The incident took place at about 2315 hrs, IST in Jubilee Hills in uptown Hyderabad.

Police commissioner Prasada Rao said that the department was tipped off about Reddy's whereabouts earlier.

He also said that Reddy was brokering a land deal in sector 46 in Jubilee Hills.

He opened fire when they surrounded him and was shot in the exchange. Reddy's aides reportedly escaped.

He was named in several cases of murder, kidnap and extortion in the twin cities and was a known associate of the underworld don Chhota Rajan.

He was arrested in June 2004 after a shootout at Filmnagar but was recently acquitted.

Giving out more updates about Aziz Reddy, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Prasad Rao said, “He was involved in many cases in Hyderabad and Bombay. In 1990 he committed two murders during the communal riots. He was under police surveillance in Hyderabad, so fled to Mumbai where he became a part of Chhota Rajan’s gang.”

“He committed 10 murders and was involved in various other cases of extortion. He was also arrested for possessing an illegal weapon in 2004. Lately he was involved in extortion in land deals. We got a tip off and he was killed in the encounter,” he added.
