New Delhi: Students appearing for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations will most likely be able to know how they have fared in the tests.

With the Central Information Commission (CIC) on Tuesday making strong observations demanding greater transparency in the conduct of exams, it is clear that the students may now get access to information related to the selection process.

"The CIC has discussed the matter and is of the view that the entire examination process is to be made transparent. Therefore, the students' demand of knowing cut-off marks, marksheets and model answer papers, is to be disclosed," says Information Commissioner, MM Ansari.

The CIC had on September 1 asked UPSC to disclose this information as well but UPSC filed a review petition.

A large number of students had approached and filed appeals before the commission saying that UPSC cannot function under a veil.

Students have understood which way the wind is blowing at the CIC. "I am very happy with this decision. Now, I can know what my faults exactly were and what needs to be done in the future," says Saurabh Singh, a UPSC aspirant.

If this plea by the students is upheld, it will be a historic move. For long, the UPSC has functioned behind an iron curtain insisting that it needs to be secretive about its methods and procedures.

The UPSC's logic is that they provide a clean examination system. But that might all change if the CIC wants the veil to be lifted.
