Rochester: In the US, six-month old conjoined twins were successfully separated and are in a stable condition after surgery.

Abigail and Isabelle Carlsen were born last November, and have spent five months looking eye to eye.

They were joined at the diaphragm, pancreas and liver, and shared a common bile duct and part of an intestine.

Since February, a team of 70 people has been looking after the twins, preparing for the surgery.

And on Friday May 12, 30 people, including 18 surgeons took part in the operation, to separate the twins.

Said Dr Christopher Moir, "The trouble was when Isabelle's heart was going back into her chest wall cavity so that the blood pressure could eventually drop. It has remained stable, which is the good news."

The surgery lasted about 13 hours. Doctors say the operation was a success and the girls are doing fine now.
