Mumbai: After victory over New Zealand on Monday, India lost their second warm-up win ahead of this week's ICC Women's World Cup as they went down by five wickets to Australia at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. A total of 222 proved difficult to defend against a strong Australia unit led by Jodie Fields, whose 46-ball 52 was the only half-century of the match and one that proved critical to the win.
Having opted to bat, India made a good start through a 47-run stand between Poonam Raut (31) and Thirush Kamini (30) but the innings came undone once the openers were dismissed. At 101 for 1 the home team looked good for a strong total but Raut's exit to Sarah Coyte saw India slump to 116 for 5. Veteran Lisa Sthalekar played a role in this collapse, dismissing Mona Meshram (25) and Karun Jain (0). She later removed Reena Malhotra (35) as India lost their seventh wicket at 171. Nagarajan Niranjana's unbeaten 35 off 26 balls took the total past 200 and gave the bowlers something to defend.
After a shaky start at 29 for 2, Australia were steered out of danger by Jess Cameron (35) and Alex Blackwell (47). Sthalekar contributed 25 off 33 balls and Joyce played a fine innings before retiring with victory in sight. The wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy put the finishing touches on the job with 36 not out off 39 balls.
For India, veteran seamer Amita Sharma took 2 for 26 while Niranjana, Ekta Bisht and Rasanara Parwin managed one wicket apiece.
Brief scores: Australia Women: 233 for 5 in 38.3 overs (Jodie Fields 52, Alex Blackwell 47) beat India Women 222 for 8 in 50 overs by five wickets
