With three back-to-back overseas ODI series wins, India are peaking at the right time for the tour of South Africa. Is the Indian cricket team shaping up well after a poor 2012? Cricket analyst Ayaz Memon joined IBNLive readers for an interaction on the issue.
Q. Will the IPL and BPL fixing issues jeopardise the future of Cricket in the sub continent. Pakistan players have already been convicted. Asked by: sundar1950in
A. I think jeopardise is a very strong word to use at this point in time, but clearly cricket Boards -- and just in the sub-continent -- need to be alert to the dangers from fixing. The trust of fans and sponsors cannot be lost.
Q. Has hosting of IPL has been a reason for players to perform better. This gave the international experience required. Asked by: sundar1950in
A. The IPL has provided a great platform for players, especially new ones, to showcase their talent. They get to rub shoulders with the best in the world and the profile of the tournament gives them a feel of the pressure and expectations that exist in international cricket.
Q. Giving way to to younger and physically fit ones has been a good thing to happen. Was it a bit delayed? Asked by: sundar1950in
A. One can always argue that some changes could have been made earlier. My way of looking at it is better late than never.
Q. When the sportsmen are upbeat will the authorities(BCCI) get into right shape? Asked by: sundar1950in
A. Indian cricket is going through a fantastic phase right now, but the BCCI must ensure that the trust deficit it faces is bridged quickly...
Q. The good performances are a bit clouded by the bad revelations of gambling and fixing scam. Will cricket get clean? Asked by: sundar1950in
A. Corruption is the bane of all sports, not just cricket. In our part of the world, this is amplified because cricket is so hugely popular. How clean the sport will be depends on the surveillance done by authorities for sure, but ultimately by players staying away from corruption
Q. Is the Indian cricket team shaping up well after a poor 2012? Asked by: Harry
A. Yes, I think that has helped because more players are getting opportunities and from many places/associations.
Q. Do you think that the change in Ranji Trophy Format helped Team India to perform better? Asked by: SashidharBabu
A. As above.
Q. Do you think Yuvraj, Zaheer and Gambhir will be in the Playing XI for 2015 WC? Asked by: kabir
A. I don't think they will be too old, but the onus is on them to win back their places. Fitness and form will be crucial though as there are several younger players in the race for places now.
Q. Do you think India have enough fire power in their bowling to defend the title! Asked by: Arvind
A. Million dollar question. The attack is young and still untested playing overseas. I think a couple of quality fast bowlers (the current ones could become those) will be needed in Australia and New Zealand.
Q. Should Sachin Tendulkar make way for younger players like Rohit Sharma,A Rahane, A Rayudu. The longer SRT stays, it will be disadvantage for the said players' chances playing in Tests. Asked by: satish
A. He has already retired from ODIs. In Tests too, I don't seem him playing longer than perhaps the SA series. All told, it is only one place he occupies!
Q. Do you think Sachin will do justice to his place in SA tour since he will be short of match practice? Asked by: SashidharBabu
A. All his fans would hope so! At this stage of his career, the risk factor is obviously far greater. Where fitness is concerned, I can tell you that he has started work on his regimen. Also playing badminton everyday for speed and reflexes as he told me when we met briefly last week.
Q. This might be a question that is not relevant to the debate, but since you are the right person to ask. Is it correct to give Arjuna Award to cricketers when cricket in itself is not associated with Indian Sporting Federation? Indian Stars like Tom Joseph miss out because of cricketers. Whats your thought? Asked by: Adarsh
A. I see nothing wrong with cricketers getting the Arjuna Award. It's the biggest sport in India. By that token, cricketers wouldn;t be eligible for Padmas and other awards too. By the way, the first cricketer to win an Arjuna award was Salim Durani - in 1962 I think.
Q. India lost 4-0, 2-1 vs England, 4-0 vs Aus & will lose again vs SAF. Transition is when ur Best players leave at their best like Hayden,Langer,Warne,MC Grath, not at their worst like Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag, Tendulkar who were hoped to thrown from the team. (Dravid is better than anyone in England thats not an excuse for him). Pujara is good only in India bt couldn't help India vs Eng 2-1 which could have 3-0 or 2-0 due to absense of Monty. Asked by: Anonymous
A. Why are you so pessimistic?
Q. Who do you think can replace MSD when he hangs up his boots! Asked by: Arvind
A. Virat Kohli for one is doing all the right things: making runs and winning matches as captain.
