Dominica: The offspinner Shane Shillingford has broken the West Indian record for most wickets in a two-match series, and following his second consecutive Man-of-the-Match award and first Man-of-the-Series award he is keen to continue the good work achieved against Zimbabwe. Shillingford finished with 19 wickets at 10.52 in two Tests to surpass former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh, who took 16 against New Zealand in 1994-95.
Returning to the side after more than nine months, Shillingford played a major role in West Indies' 2-0 series win - which extended their unbeaten run of six - with nine wickets at Bridgetown and ten in Dominica on Friday. Before this series, Shillingford's previous Test was against England in May 2012. He was recalled with Sunil Narine being rested for the first Test, following a first-class season in which he took 24 wickets in three matches for Windward Islands.
"When I was dropped I felt a certain way, but I never let it get to me too deep. I kept looking forward to the first-class season, to go there and take some wickets and work my way back into the Test team. It was hard work to get back, but now I'm back I plan to stay here," he said after picking up the match and series awards on Friday.
Following figures of 5 for 59 in Zimbabwe's first innings, Shillingford grabbed 5 for 34 as West Indies won by an innings and 65 runs inside four days. His wickets included Zimbabwe's third, fourth and fifth batsmen and two lower middle-order wickets. "Today, I concentrated and was willing to be patient to get my wickets. It was a matter of not being complacent and applying ourselves. One of our goals was not to be complacent. We knew once we had them down we had to keep them down and that is what we did," said Shillingford.
"Here is one of the places where the wicket is spin-friendly, I knew I had to get the balls in the right areas and build the pressure, and that is what I tried to do out there. It was a really great team performance and we are all very proud of what we achieved. The spirit was really good."
