James Tredwell content to make way for Graeme Swann

London: England offspinner James Tredwell is bracing for time on the bench as the senior Graeme Swann looks set to return to fitness ahead of Wednesday's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final at The Oval. Neither offspinner has had notable success in the tournament - Tredwell has one wicket at an average of 78 from two matches and Swann a solitary wicket at 50 in his one appearance - but Tredwell has conceded he may not be in the playing XI.
"I'm in the squad and I'm getting a game here and there. I don't think I've let anyone down in the games I've played, so I hope that can continue," said Tredwell. "For my part it's fingers crossed, isn't it? But again Swann has been brilliant, hasn't he, for a period of time. So if he's fit, I'm sure he'll come into the reckoning - as they say."
Tredwell opened England's campaign against Australia with 1 for 51 and then sat out as Swann returned to play Sri Lanka. Drafted back into the XI when Swann was sidelined by a calf injury, the 31-year-old went wicketless for 27 runs in his four overs during England's ten-run win over New Zealand.
The win over New Zealand meant the hosts topped Group A and they will now face South Africa in the first semi-final. England last won a multi-team ODI tournament in early 2007 when they beat Australia to lift the CB Series. Prior to that, they last won a tri-series at home in 2003. Tredwell, who has played 17 ODIs including during the 2011 World Cup, was confident of the team's chances.
"We have as a good chance now of winning this tournament as any team in the next stage. We don't want to look too far ahead - to lifting that trophy, we hope - but equally, it's something that's in the back of your mind," he said. "The semi-final is going to be tough, but we're two games away now from winning a major tournament. That's how we're looking at it. As a group of players, that's a place we want to get to. But first and foremost, we have a big game coming up."
