Ranji Trophy, Group A, Round 9, Day 2: Railways take 77-run lead against Bengal

Kolkata: Pune Warriors seamer Krishna Kant Upadhyay and the unknown Ranjit Mali from Assam rocked the depleted Bengal to give Railways a 77-run first innings lead in their Group A match here on Sunday.
In reply to Railways' paltry score of 214, Bengal were skittled out for 157 with seamers Upadhyay (3 for 30) and Mali (3 for 39) and leggie Karan Sharma (4 for 22) among wickets as young Bengal batsmen showed their ineptness to play at the first-class level.At stumps, Railways were 20 for no loss to take an overall lead of 77. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala was the top-scorer (47) for Bengal before he became Sharma's second victim.Brief scores: Railways 214 all out in 89.2 overs (Amit Paunikar 50, Sourav Sarkar 4 for 62) and 20 for no loss. Bengal 157 all out (Abhishek Jhunjhunwala 47, Sudip Chatterjee 38; Karan Sharma 4 for 22, Krishnakant Upadhyay 3 for 30, Ranjitkumar Mali 3 for 39).Rajasthan vs Hyderabad: Read Navneet Mundhras match report here.Mumbai vs Gujarat:In Mumbai, opener Wasim Jaffer (171) scored a century as Mumbai enhanced their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Ranji Trophy by taking a 79-run lead against Gujarat.Replying to Gujarat's 244, Mumbai ended the day two at a solid 323 for 5 with Suryakumar Yadav (23) and Aditya Nayar (6) at the crease.Jaffer batted superbly almost all day as Gujarat managed just three wickets on Sunday. His 171 came off 271 balls with the help of 21 fours and a six. Jaffer found good support from Hiken Shah (82) as the two added 213 runs for the third wicket. Left-arm paceman Rush Kalaria denied Jaffer a double century as he had the Mumbai opener caught by Gohel at the fag end of the day. Kalaria also sent packing Nikhil Patil, who could not even open his account.Brief scores:Gujarat 1st innings: 244 all out; Mumbai 1st innigs 232 for seven in 99 overs. After posting 242 in their first innings, Saurashtra, inspired by left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat's triple blows at the top, bundled out the visitors for only 135. The hosts had extended their lead to 125 after reaching 18 for 1 in their second innings. At stumps on the second day of this last group league match, opener Shitanshu Kotak and Cheteshwar Pujara were batting for Saurashtra.Barring Naman Ojha who top-scored with 44, none of the Madhya Pradesh batsman could make much of an impact. Apart from Unadkat who returned with figures of 3 for 20, Vishal Joshi (3 for 17) and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (3 for 51) were also among the wicket-takers.
