Root puts New Zealand to the sword in tour match

London: New Zealand found it impossible to dislodge Joe Root as the England Lions batsman maintained his prolific form in the second day of the tour match at Grace Road on Friday.
Root finished the day on 105 not out as he recorded his third hundred in four innings, sharing a stand of 182 with Michael Carberry, who hit 77, as the Lions reached 219 for 2 at the close.
Yorkshire batsman Root is captaining the Lions in this warm-up for next week's first Test between England and New Zealand and he is sure to be named on Saturday in Alastair Cook's squad for the Lord's clash after taking his first-class tally well beyond 500 runs already this season.
Toby Roland-Jones took four for 54 earlier in the day as the Kiwis were dismissed for 285 - a mediocre return for the tourists, who had closed a rain-restricted first day on 184 for three but endured a bleak second with both bat and ball.
After Hamish Rutherford went early, for the addition of only 10 to his overnight 116, the Kiwis never threatened significant consolidation despite Dean Brownlie's solid 42 not out.
