Pretoria: Shikhar Dhawan came within 21 runs of breaking the all-time highest individual score in List A cricket, smashing 248 off 150 balls in a ferocious display of hitting at the LC de Villiers Oval on Monday. Dhawan's outstanding innings contained 30 fours and seven sixes as South Africa A's bowlers were dispatched to all corners of the stadium.
His effort came in a must-win match for India A, needing to qualify for the final of the triangular series. After 50 overs, they had a total of 433 for 3.
Dhawan dominated a 91-run opening stand with Murali Vijay, in which he reached his fifty in 31 balls. He slowed down to reach three figures in 86 balls, but then needed just 22 balls to reach 150. His second 100 had taken just 46 balls.
Dhawan reached the landmark of 200 in 132 balls, and then clattered six fours and three sixes before he was bowled by Justy Theron for 248 in the 45th over - 21 runs short of beating of former England batsman Ali Brown's record score of 268* in List A cricket.
Dhawan dominated a second-wicket stand of 285 with his India A captain, Cheteshwar Pujara.
