Pune: Even as Sachin Tendulkar is in Kolkata to discharge his IPL duties for Mumbai Indians, a special programme has been planned in his home state where 100 young cricketers will be present with former India captain Chandu Borde and former Maharashtra captain Shantanu Sugwekar. The duo of Borde and Sugwekar, who have had a close association with Tendulkar, will share their experiences with the budding cricketers during the programme at the Nehru Stadium in Swargate.
The 46-year-old Sugwekar might not have played for India but he had had the opportunity to lead Tendulkar for West Zone and their employers Sungrace Mafatlal.
"We played together for about 10 years but being busy with national duty he was coming there on and off," Sugwekar told PTI. But whenever he was around he made sure to play for Sungrace Mafatlal."
Sugwekar fondly recalls their 400-plus partnership against Western Railway in a Times Shield match.
"We were three down for about 100 at lunch but after he joined we batted two sessions and we were 500/3 at close as both of us notched double centuries."
Asked what makes Tendulkar stand out from the rest, Sugwekar said, "His humility. He might have achieved so much but he's so simple and has respect for you."
"Once he was away playing in Bahrain for an invitational match, but he promised me to come to Aurangabad the next day to inaugurate my health club. I was worried, but in the end he kept his word. That's Tendulkar," Sugwekar said.
Pune's cricketing icon Borde along with Sugwekar will also release ninth edition of a biographical book on Tendulkar, named 'Dhruv Tara'. Penned by sports writer Sanjay Dudhane, the 100-page book has all details about Tendulkar.
"Tendulkar had released the fourth edition before 2011 World Cup. Now, it's out with more updates," Dudhane said.
