Port of Spain: Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews praised his side for showing character in a 39-run (D/L) win over West Indies in the league match of the Celkon Mobile Cup on Monday.
Lauding the team, Angelo said, "The guys showed a lot of character. There was some grass on the wicket and we had to get the runs. Sangakkara batted superbly and he held the innings together. We had a small team talk and with D/L rules, batting first is a disadvantage."
In a rain-marred match, which lasted for two days, Sri Lanka posted 219 for 8 in 41 overs thanks to a brilliant 90 not out from Kumar Sangakkara. The Sri Lankan skipper also lauded Sangakkara for his gritty knock.
The left-hander stretched his fourth wicket stand with Lahiru Thirimanne to 64 once play got under way nearly two hours late on the reserve day. Thirimanne scored a valuable 23 off 73 balls. Sangakkara and Mathews added a further 46 for the fifth wicket either side of another rain interval.
"Sangakkara batted brilliantly. He held the innings together. We had a team talk, and we needed to get runs. Especially with D/L, batting first is a disadvantage. It is tough to play around rain delays batting first. We had to get the runs, and I am glad that we got the runs," Mathews said.
"The rain delays were frustrating but I am glad that we put the runs on the board. It feels good to be contributing to the team's cause", Mathews added.
Sri Lanka lead the table with nine points and a positive run rate while West Indies also has nine points but an inferior run rate. India has five points and must win on Wednesday to have any chance of advancing.
