A comprehensive statistical analysis of India's most successful Test captains - at home and away.
#The eight-wicket win against Australia in the first Test at Chennai is MS Dhoni's 21st Test victory which puts him level with Sourav Ganguly as India's most successful Test captain. Dhoni has captained India in 44 Tests while Ganguly was at the helm for 49 Test matches.
#Mohammad Azharuddin and Sunil Gavaskar are at No. 3 and 4 respectively as India's most successful Test captains with 14 and 9 Test match wins in 47 Tests each.
#MS Dhoni's batting average as a Test captain is 44.75 which is third best after Sachin Tendulkar (51.35) and Sunil Gavaskar (50.72) among the ones who have captained India in atleast 10 Test matches. Rahul Dravid (44.51), Azharuddin (43.93) and Sourav Ganguly (37.66) are behind him.
# Gavaskar has scored most hundreds (11) as a captain. Azharuddin (9) and Tendulkar are (7) are second and third respectively. Dhoni and Ganguly have scored five Test centuries each as Test captains.
#In the winning causes as a captain, Dhoni's average is 65.86 which is the best among all Indian captains who have won at least five Test matches. Azharuddin is second with 63.00 and Dravid is third with 57.90. Tendulkar's average in Test matches won as a captain is a paltry 30.71.
# Ganguly remains India's most successful captain overseas. He won 11 Tests (out of 28). Dhoni and Dravid are second with five Test victories each. Though it is noteworthy that out of Ganguly's 11 overseas Test wins, six came against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
# Tendulkar's batting average of 54.90 in overseas is best among all Indian captains who were captain in atleast 10 Tests overseas. Rahul Dravid is second with 46.88 and Ganguly is third with 43.41. Dhoni's average in overseas as a Test captain is 33.44.
# Azharuddin has scored the most hundreds (5) as a captain in overseas Tests. Dravid and Tendulkar scored four each. Dhoni is yet to score a century overseas.
# In winning causes as a captain in overseas Tests, Ganguly leads the packs with an average of 66.66. Dravid is second with 52.14 while Dhoni's average is 31.85
