Bangalore: Royal Challengers Bangalore have named Virat Kohli as their captain for the sixth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting April 3. The 24-year-old has succeeded New Zealander Daniel Vettori as full-time captain of the Bangalore-based franchise after a strong IPL 5 season, as announced on the team website on Wednesday.
"We are delighted to announce Virat as our captain. His hunger to learn, lead, motivate and set an example is unquestionable," said franchise owner Vijay Mallya on the RCB website.
Kohli has scored 1639 runs at an average of 28.25 for RCB, whom he joined in 2008 as the franchise's Under-19 pick following his leading India to the World Cup title. He stands as the 11th highest run-getter in tournament history and the third-most successful batsman in the Champions League Twenty20.
"Glad to be appointed captain of RCB. It's a great feeling ... being drafted as an U-19 in 2008 and now to be considered to lead the side of great players, is a big honour. I thank the owners for reposing their faith and I am looking forward to the challenge and the responsibility to carry the team to greater heights," said Kohli.
RCB begin their IPL 6 campaign on April 4 with a home game against Mumbai Indians.
