In a country where heinous crimes like murder goes unpunished, in a country where mass murderers get publicly elected as ministers, in a country where average trial over a property dispute takes 3 decades, no matter how tough the laws are, average population knows better that if they could get away with killings, they can easily get away with IP theft or at least prolong the arbitration process for 2-3 decades and bribe their way out when the matter has cooled off. Try to protect life first before you go on trying to protect data :)

WEll!! aren't we all ashamed of such acts, it is we all should feel very bad that our own young generation are indulging in such petty crimes or falling prey to fringe benifits. You the media should take a corrective steps by exposing them and their famliy, will ensure that no other guy or gal does the same, these guys should be punished in such a way that there life is in shambels. Instead of them rotting in the jail, they can be allowed to roam around but they should not get any work. This will really bring some sense to the each and every individual. Secondly you should create a website wherein all these guys who have been caught stealing or selling information.SO that any organisation who wants to employ should do a chek on this website, secondly the website should also contain the names of those who have been warned and asked to give their resignation letter.
The Indian IT company is in some sort of recognation threat, high time we change the rule, internet availbility on every nook and corner with no proper curbing is the real threat. Hope the Mr Dayanidhi Maran and Mr.Kiran Karnik come up with solutions and bring back the INDIAN IT on the MAINLINE.

I agree with Rajeev. Situation of Law in India is very bad. It is not able to protect these big companies then how can it protect a poor man? An international company leaving India is not a small thing. It is a big loss to India itself. Also this type of move can make employers who wish to work in India and who are already working in India to think again whether to continue their business or not... In my view India is a poor country, where many people are getting jobs through these international companies. If they leave then it will always be a big loss for India. If India need to grow then they would need to ensure their safety here.

The problem of data theft needs to be tackled on multiple fronts. Also this issue is not just India specific. Data theft happens in many countries because there is a competitor willing to pay the price for it.
This unethical practice needs to be curbed with substantial penalties, long jail term for the persons involved, and buyer(s) of such information. Also, if any organization indulges in procuring such data they should be stopped from conducting its business.
Ignoring such issues or treating them casually will have huge repercussions as people will question our moral values, and can no more trust us as business partners. Since such incidents have happened a few times (quite a few of them were sting operations to expose the weak BPO practices) Indian companies will need to implement tamper proof systems for eliminating such activities. But this also has associated cost factors which need to be taken into account. If only all employees were ethical, we would not have such a problem. But, then, we are asking for utopia! Until then, organizations need to implement cost effective, secure systems and processes.

Read few comments and was surprised to see people taking such things lightly. The moment a firm pulls out of India, it will influence others too. And dont forget whole forest gets destroyed by just a spark. People first ignore such spark and with time they feel the heat. With current attitude of Politicians (Illeterate, corrupt, criminals), PATHETIC infrastructure, CORRUPTION every where, it may take time but cant ignore that such sparks can burn out whole industry. In such a case, just imagine, how many people ll be left unemployed as currently in India, there is no altenative opportunity for IT engineers. And in return, how many families ll suffer. And during these suffering POLITICIANS and People responsible for this will not take part in our grief but will keep enjoying their life as they are doing now... so wake up guys...

I think there is no point in blaming the Indian Police or any one. Reading from the newspaper about this case, this company had weak security controls in the first place it self. They should have been more proactive towards their security rather than reactive.Agreed we need to improve our cyber crime cells etc, but could not have the company implemented a BS7799 security standard to improvise their security posture ? How could a software techie, be it even a project manager level, get so much access to so much data ? And why did the company realise it so late ? The company needs to highlight its own lack of security controls along with poor response from cyber cell. Agreed India is a low cost resource, but security costs more and that cost is just a fraction of your total intellectual property.

The company needed a scape goat to shift from here. Recently in US, in one of the state there was a theft of senior citizens personal data and it just made a headline for two days. So, the balme game is on.. Just watch and wait. This happens across the globe and no one is expception....
In US you will receive more SPAM emails than the whole world. And one thing I want to tell you the whole world email runs from US... Keep this in mind..
