Kolkata: In a bizarre case of medical negligence, nurses at Kolkata's Belle Vue hospital allegedly declared a baby stillborn, only to find him alive later.

Thirty-three-year-old Sangita Das was admitted to the hospital on the night of July 1, after going into a three-month premature labour.

When taken to the Belle Vue hospital, she was told no doctor was available at the time. Later she gave birth to a baby boy in the same hospital but the nurses informed her the baby was stillborn.

Sangita's family alleges that without telling them, the hospital arranged a funeral van and prepared a death certificate as well.

But in the morning after a doctor found the baby breathing, they immediately shifted him to another hospital, where he is fighting for life now.

A case of medical negligence has been registered against the hospital.

“Three nurses who helped me deliver they said my baby was dead. The next day, I came to know my baby is alive,” alleges Sangita.

Sangita’s husband Manas Kumar, writes in his complaint, "On completion of the delivery, the nurses informed my wife, that the son she had delivered had expired on birth. Hearing the news my wife went into shock. She was neither shown the baby nor given any further information. A little later the Matron on night duty arrived and asked my wife to inform the family members about the expiry."
