New Delhi: The Capital was pleasantly surprised at the sudden change in weather on Monday morning as Delhi was lashed with torrential rains and gusty winds.

The thunderstorm on Sunday night is said to be the strongest in over a decade with the wind speed recorded at 100 kilometers per hour. Temperatures dipped to a breezy 22 degrees, which was five notches below normal.

Delhiites woke up to a breezy Monday morning with most saying they skipped office “just to enjoy the weather.”

“We can’t usually come out in the day time because of the heat so we are enjoying the rainy day,” an office-goer said.

On any other afternoon, even a popular spot like India Gate is deserted as few people venture out in the heat, but on Monday people were out in full swing trying to make the most of the pleasant day.

And even while weathermen say this kind of weather is not dramatically unusual for this time of year, the freak weather has caused destruction in many parts of the country.

On Saturday night, 11 people died and 25 were injured after a wall collapsed in Khera village in Haryana.

“Thundershowers are normal in the month of May. This time winds have just been a little stronger,” Director, Indian Met Department, B P Yadav said.

Met officials also said squalls and thundershowers over the next few days are likely to get more intense. Many parts of north, northwest and east India are in for isolated to heavy showers in the next few days.
