New Delhi: The Delhi government has decided to impose a cess on all diesel sold in the Capital. Consumers will now have to pay 25 paise per liter more for diesel.

The money will be used to fund pollution control measures. The exact date of implementation of the cess has not yet been decided.

The government has also decided to set up adequate number of centres at 19 border points to prevent the entry of polluting vehicles into the capital from neighbouring states, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

"The ambient air quality of the capital has been a major concern, hence, the efforts to control air pollution due to vehicular emissions. There is a need to streamline these emissions," she was further quoted as saying.

Presently, diesel costs Rs 30.48 in the Capital. The Delhi government has also decided to approach the Union Petroleum Ministry for introduction of 50 PPM Sulphur Diesel in the National Capital Region by 2008-09.

Over 30 per cent of the cars in the Capital run on diesel and the city adds close to 1,000 diesel cars a day.
