New York: Democrats have selected Barack Obama as their presidential candidate and it’s time for the party to get the support of Indian-Americans.

Under the umbrella of South Asians for Obama, an effort will soon be in place to get Indian-Americans to turn out in large numbers for the Illinois Senator.

“One of the strategies we'll be employing is a faith-based strategy. We'll be doing voter registration initiatives in mosques and temples and churches and gurdwaras to try and get as many people involved and excited about the campaign and the elections in November,” said Obama campaign volunteer Theresa Thanjan.

There is optimism that Obama's story as the son of an immigrant will resonate with the Indian-American community.

“Obama spent his first night in New York just one block away from where I live on 108th Street. I think being able to do that struggle as well as being able to connect with people is what has attracted me most towards him,” said another volunteer, Raj Gilda.

Plans to get the Indian-American community’s support will kick off in the days to come. For now, Obama's supporters are still savouring the nomination after a prolonged contest.

“It was exciting. I think we were part of history. After 15 months of a long and exhausting struggle, it's nice to finally see him appear as the presumptive nominee,” said Obama delegate Hrishi Karthikeyan.

That was just the primary cycle, though. Soon the phone-banking and door-to-door canvassing will be under way.
