New Delhi: After a gruelling summer, the first showers are always a pleasure to watch. So while the monsoons have brought relief from the heat, it has also brought with it a host of health problems.

"Collection of water promotes growth of mosquitoes and they cause malaria dengue filarial and other mosquito water born diseases," says Dr G Gupta of Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital.

The high humidity levels increase the risk of fungal infections. Dampness can lead to skin problems and athlete's foot. He advices taking bath at least twice a day to keep the infections at bay.

“We strongly advocate loose cotton clothing and, cleansing local areas wherever fungal infections are more prone to happen, you can use talcum powders preferably anti fungal in nature,” says Dermatologist, Fortis Hospital, Dr D K Jain.

The onset of the monsoons also leads to hair care problems like stickiness and dandruff.

To protect hair in the monsoons, apart from washing the hair regularly, one must use a mild shampoo and a conditioner on the hair after every wash. Eating a balanced and rich diet will also help strengthen hair.

Contaminated food from the street, like chaat or samosa’s could get you down with diarrhoea or even Hepatitis A. Therefore vaccination against it is essential.

Even fever during the rainy season should not be taken lightly. One must consult a doctor if the fever lasts for more than two days, as it could be a case of malaria or dengue.
