New Delhi: After a doctor was beaten up the relatives of a patient, employees of Delhi’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital have gone on an indefinite strike.

About 800 nursing staff, 200 interns, 600 students and 700 resident doctors are striking work.

After a doctor was reportedly beaten up the relatives of a patient, resident doctors, interns and nursing staff have not been attending patients.

This is not one off incident in LNJP. On January 18 last year, LNJP employees went on strike, a day after there was a clash between medical staff and the relatives of a patient who died of brain hemorrhage.

Doctors however complained that they are bearing the brunt for inadequate facilities in the capital's one of the largest hospitals.

“There is security problem in the hospital. We were assured by the government that the security would be tightened but nothing has happened. Last night we were threatened by one of attendants of the patient,” said Resident Doctor Association President Dr Jitender Singla.

“Basic facilities are not there in the hospital and because of this doctors are bearing the brunt,” he added.

Informing that talks are on between Health Ministry and doctors, Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri said, “We are trying to convince the doctors to call off their strike. We have provided security to them. We will review the situation.”

“Even doctors have to be aware about patients need and need to work towards satisfying their demands, patients on their part should also show some restraints,” said Shastri.
